Comparing Yourself
Good afternoon and welcome back to this afternoon's blog. Before we get into the meat of today's topic, it seems justified to touch on the horrific events in Lebanon earlier this week. The pictures we are all seeing on the news look devastating - let's take a moment to think about those who have lost their homes, their lives and those who were injured, especially in today's climate. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you all. I saw a map yesterday that showed the scale of the damage had that occurred in Central London. Let's just say that I wouldn't be writing to you today (from 13 miles away)! A rather eye-opening thought that should make us all appreciate what we have and a reminder we must never take anything for granted.
Today I wanted to talk about how we always compare ourselves to other people. I do this almost every day. Whether I'm talking to a friend or watching something on TV, if I see a good quality in someone I will always question myself and think "Am I able to do that?" And even if the answer is yes, I will then think to myself "Am I better than that person?" More often than not I come to the conclusion that I am not better and should improve myself. Instead, I should be thinking something along the lines of "Right, that person might have that skill, but there's things I can do that person can't." We are all unique individuals, and we should always respect ourselves for who we are.
Why do we compare ourselves so much though? Firstly, I believe as humans we get pleasure from finding faults in ourselves and by putting our good points to one side. We always want to improve what we already have. Instead of learning from what others can do, however, we just think that if one individual can do it, then we should also be able to it. Above that, it is human nature to see our weaknesses before our strengths. It is so important we give ourselves that feel-good feeling. Our mental status will benefit from it because we feel better about what we can do. Just think, if all of us were Lionel Messi-quality footballers, there would be no accountants, no nurses and no police force (we would all me multi-millionaires though)!
Another human trait, no matter how much we try and fight against it, is jealousy. Let's face it, we are all jealous of so many different people for all kinds of weird and wonderful things. For example. you're jealous of your best friend having a newer car. At the end of the day, a car is a car. Yes we all wish we had that top-of-the-range 50K sports car. Realistically, however, we can't all afford one of those. Instead of being jealous of what we don't have, be appreciative for the things we do have. A good friend of mine has just purchased a lithograph from Taylor Swift's new album, folklore (if you haven't listened to it, sort yourself out)! From the second I saw it I was like "Why have I not got one of those?" Then I started thinking about the people in third world countries who haven't got food, clean water or even a proper roof over their heads. While I sit here whining like a little kid (reference alert) because I've not got a lithograph. I am very grateful for all the wonderful things I have in life, as we all should be.
As I briefly mentioned on Monday, I have got a very special guest writer coming up very soon for you lovely people. Even though she doesn't feel she needs to be hyped up too much, I'm going to anyway because she is incredibly talented. Her name is Chloe and she mostly writes album reviews for a music website (I'll let her give you guys more information). However, she does write alternative genres and you are in for a real treat. I spent last night researching her choice of topic, and wow! I honestly learnt so much! Hopefully you will all be as intrigued to read about it. And the topic is...(you weren't seriously expecting me to tell you). That's Chloe's job. I will also be sharing some of her writing on my social media so please go and check her out. She's an amazing person who deserves all the love and support she gets and more!
Unfortunately, you will have to put up with me again on Monday. I know, you love me really guys.
Have a good weekend. Remember the sun screen and water. Lots of water!
Connor
