European Finals Predictions
Good afternoon and welcome back to this afternoon's blog (probably not the right word for this one). Nearly 13 months ago, the 2019/2020 football season got underway. This weekend, just a week before the new season commences, the current one ends. I have enjoyed the last few days watching 4 thrilling semi-finals, full of goals, drama and controversy (VAR strikes yet again). Over the next 72 hours, both the Europa League and the Champions League will reach their conclusion. With 2 great games and 4 strong teams, all outcomes I believe are realistically possible. However, what do I think will happen in these games. You've come to the right place to find out.
Europa League Final - Inter Milan v Sevilla
This is a competition that Sevilla have really learned to dominate in recent years - they've won it 4 times in this decade alone. Recent victories over English duo Wolves and Manchester United have shown glimpses of what they are capable of, but they have nowhere near hit their usual high standards. They are a solid team in all areas of the pitch, but really need to find top gear in this final. Inter, meanwhile, look free-scoring and dominant. A 5-1 win over Shakhtar in their semi-final demonstrates the fire power they have up front. Their main man, Romelu Lukaku, has been transformed since his summer move from Manchester United. With the likes of Alexis Sanchez supporting, the team are always going to create chances. Both teams have already qualified for the Champions League through their domestic leagues, but both will be desperate to end an interrupted season with a European title. And I think the Italian runner-ups will do just that.
Prediction 2-1
Champions League Final - PSG v Bayern
If you looked up in the dictionary the meaning of 'clash of the titans', you would probably see this fixture. Without question the 2 best teams in the competition this season, and they are both scoring goals like they are going out of fashion. PSG might have needed a little bit of luck to get past Atalanta in the quarter-final, but they made up for that by blowing RB Leipzig of Germany completely out the water in their semi-final. The fluid front line of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Angel Di Maria create so many chances for each other that they will always cause defences to worry. On the other side of the pitch, it is fair to say that Bayern are a machine. An 8-2 annihilation of Barcelona really made them favourites for the competition, backed up with an easy 3-0 semi-final win over French outfit Lyon. In Robert Lewandowski, they have the highest scorer in this season's competition. Their squad is littered with young superstars, Alphonso Davies and Serge Gnabry among the most impressive. It is hard to see how you stop Bayern from scoring. The good thing for PSG is they have equally good attacking players. This one is so hard to call, but I think Bayern's added experience will play a part in the end (and I really do mean the end).
Prediction 2-2 (Bayern to win on penalties)
