Premier League Matchday 1 Predictions

Fulham v Arsenal

This will be a strange opening for Fulham. Usually, a newly promoted team would be playing in front of a full, buzzing atmosphere. Instead, they will be entertaining an empty stadium on their top flight return. Arsenal have won trophies in their previous 2 competitive games and should be raring to go. With Maghales and Saliba arriving, the weak defence suddenly looks a lot stronger. Either way, the Gunners will open with a win.

Prediction 0-2

Crystal Palace v Southampton

Palace ended the last campaign with just 1 point from their last 8 games. Meanwhile, the Saints finished the season very strongly, helped largely by the goal scoring form of Danny Ings. Both of these teams have had a much longer break than most and should be ready for this fixture. I can't see much between these teams, and think that will be reflected in the result.

Prediction 1-1

Liverpool v Leeds

The Premier League winners against the Championship winners - this should be a good game. There are still concerns about the depth of Liverpool's team, however, their first XI is undoubtedly one of the best in the world. Leeds have been busy in the transfer window, smashing their transfer record to bring in Rodrigo from Valencia. He won't prevent a humiliation for Leeds though.

Prediction 4-0

West Ham v Newcastle

Both of these teams under performed last season, with West Ham not securing safety until the final weeks. Steve Bruce has made some excellent signings this month, with the likes of Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser adding some attacking flair. I expect this to be tight, but my gut says Newcastle are going to edge it.

Prediction 1-2

West Brom v Leicester

My big worry for the home side this season is defensively. They leaked too many goals in the Championship last term, and it very nearly cost them their promotion place. Leicester have lost Ben Chilwell, but I don't think he will be missed in this fixture.

Prediction 0-2

Tottenham v Everton

Tottenham are starting to take shape under Jose Mourinho, however, they still need back up to Harry Kane. Everton have had a great transfer window so far, with James Rodriguez being arguably the signing of the summer. Carlo Ancelotti knows how to build a team he can work with, and I certainly expect the Toffees to improve. I think this will end level, but I don't think either team will finish in the top 4 come May.

Prediction 1-1

Sheffield United v Wolves

These teams were the most over achieving last season, with Wolves progressing to the Europa League quarter final, while Sheffield United reached the same stage in the FA Cup before losing to eventual winners Arsenal. I can't find anything to split these teams, not just in this game, but across the whole season.

Prediction 1-1

Brighton v Chelsea

Brighton are getting a reputation for being the 'best of the rest'. They always find a way to survive, but they put their fans through a rollercoaster of emotions getting there. Adam Lallana, though, should give them some more flair in midfield. Chelsea have thrown the chequebook at this season, and anything less than a title challenge has to be seen as unacceptable. If they are to challenge Liverpool and Manchester City, they need a good start. And that's exactly what they will get.

Prediction 0-2
