Change

Good afternoon and welcome back to this afternoon's blog. Here we are, another Monday, after another week of confusion and mixed messages regarding the current pandemic we are in. I have stopped watching the news and reading the papers and I am sure a lot of you will have done the same. We seem to be going round in circles with the tightening and relaxing of local lockdowns. However, this is not going to become a Covid rant. As you know if you read Friday's blog, today I want to discuss change. There are 3 main areas of change which affect us; should we embrace it or be afraid of it, will the change be good or bad and do we always need to make a change?

Change is an unknown entity to all of us and until it happens we have no way of knowing what it is going to include. We all fall into the trap of becoming too comfortable with what we know. This isn't necessarily a bad thing - we get used to something and if it works well for us then surely there is no reason to do anything else? So back to the original question (before I go off on another tangent) - should we embrace change or be afraid of it? Well, the answer very much depends on the situation. If you are asking me (and that's why you're here) then I would encourage you to be brave while maintaining caution. Life gets very boring if we have the same routine day after day, week after week, month after month and year after year (I think you get the message). Change can be damaging, but it can also take us to another level, whether it be a new job, a new hobby or anything else. You live only once so make the most of it.

If we do decide to make that first step into the unknown we begin to understand whether that is for a good reason or a bad reason. We have to weigh up if the change is beneficial for us or if it is going to make something more difficult. Generally we only make a change if we feel it is appropriate or we have to do it to prevent something happening that scares us. However, sometimes we have to take that risk by making a change when we know there could be consequences. For example, you make a career change and accept a new job in a sector that you are totally unfamiliar with. You are told all the benefits during the interview process and it all sounds great, but the reality is that until you start the job you are not in a position to judge that for yourself. These risks are part of life.

Sometimes we make a change in our lives because we want to, maybe we get bored or because we are inspired by the decision of a friend or a family member. But do we really need to do it? I mean surely if your life is good and you are happy and successful then there shouldn't be any reason to move from that path. Every decision we make affects the rest of our lives. Even something as simple as whether to do our shopping in Sainsburys or Asda (personally I'm a Tesco kind of guy). Where we go, what we do and who we meet up with all impacts our future in some way. So think carefully before you try something new. Is it really going to change our lives? Or have we done it so we can feel brave and adventurous?

There is nothing wrong with change. The only wrong thing about change is a poor mental behavioural decision. Life does not control that. Only we do.

See you Friday when football returns!
