New Year, New Start, New You
Good afternoon and welcome back to this afternoon's blog - the first one of 2021 and the 65th overall. I, like you, have got no idea where that time has gone. Days have merged into weeks and weeks have merged into months, largely due to the pandemic of course. I hope that everyone enjoyed their Christmas and New Year celebrations, irrespective of how small these might have been. But all things, good and bad, must come to an end. So as we wave (very gratefully) goodbye to 2020, we welcome 2021 with open arms and ask ourselves one very important question - "Can this year get any worse?" The answer is probably not. Well, hopefully not anyway. With a New Year comes an opportunity for a fresh start. 2020 is old news now and it should not take up any of our time. Without any further ado, let's commence the blogging for 2021.
To an unfortunately large extent, the first few months of the year are going to look very similar to what we have experienced. From local lockdowns, national lockdowns, tiers one, two, three and four. We might have to continue the Zoom meetings and working from home and not seeing our friends and family as often as we want to. However, we can have the improved attitude this year that there is at least a light at the end of the tunnel (more self-promo don't you love it). We should attack this year with a much more positive mindset and have the confidence in the Government to steer us through these troubled waters to the shore (did I just say that out loud - who am I kidding)!
So what can we look forward to this year? There are a lot of major sporting events coming up - The Olympics, The European Championships, The Ashes, The Ryder Cup, The Solheim Cup just to name a few of my favourites. Outside of the world of sport, there is The Eurovision Song Contest, a new Mars landing, Joe Biden becoming American President, new TV shows, films, movies, artificial intelligence and the arrival of 6G. We must find a few things that we are looking forward to throughout the year and think to ourselves "we have that coming up and after there is this." If we can keep our minds occupied then we can try to push the global situation to the back of them. We must take control of our thoughts and run with them.
There will be an awful lot this year, as there is every year, that we simply can not control. The one constant is the words and actions of other people. And I can relate this to Covid as well as everyday life. The big questions in life at the moment such as whether people wear face coverings, keep socially distanced and do they wash their hands after they sneeze? These things are out of our hands and therefore are not worth worrying about (easier said than done I realise). It is vital that we focus only on the things in which we can control - our jobs, our families, our hobbies. Even these things will maintain a certain element of changeability. We need to adapt a flexible approach and an open mind to this year, both for our sanity and the sanity of others.
So my top tip for 2021 is to be positive, have a flexible mindset and not to stress over what you can't control (ok so technically that's three things but I feel they all link nicely together). There will be constant challenges thrown at us, however, it is the way that we tackle and overcome those challenges that will define our year.
Happy New Year!
Connor
