Premier League Matchday 17 Predictions
Everton v West Ham
People say this is the time to go on a winning run and the Toffees have definitely done that. Since Richarlison has returned, there's a much brighter spark about them. Allan deserves a mention too - he is an engine in their midfield. West Ham have drawn three of their previous four games, but I don't see them getting a point here.
Prediction 2-0
Manchester United v Aston Villa
United beat Wolves with a very late deflected goal last time out, and people are getting carried away with title talk. To win the league, you need to play well and get results, and they are certainly not playing well at the moment. Villa got a deserved point at Stamford Bridge last time out and I can see them getting a result here too.
Prediction 1-1
Tottenham v Leeds
Spurs have become a bit Spursy recently by conceding too many late goals. Jose Mourinho has questioned the desire of his team, but I think it is simply a case of not sitting on a one-goal lead - if you are on top push for a second and a third. Leeds are impossible to predict this season, but I can safely say that there will be goals here.
Prediction 2-2
Crystal Palace v Sheffield United
My only criticism of Palace this season is that they are becoming increasingly reliant on Wilfred Zaha to play well. Yes he is a quality player, but at the moment their results depend on him. This one won't be a problem for them though, Sheffield United are digging themselves a deeper hole. If they are not careful then they could be down pretty soon.
Prediction 2-0
Brighton v Wolves
These two teams had the same fate last time out but in different ways. Brighton were awful against Arsenal while Wolves can consider themselves bitterly unlucky at Old Trafford. I can't really see what will split these two so a draw seems like a fair bet.
Prediction 1-1
West Brom v Arsenal
Sam Allardyce must be tearing his hair out - a fantastic point at Anfield last weekend then conceding five at home just days later. There is no point getting those big results against big teams if you keep getting trounced at home. They could suffer that again here against an Arsenal side playing with much more confidence and much more intensity.
Prediction 0-3
Burnley v Fulham
This definitely will not be a classic to see in the new year, but it is certainly important for both teams. Burnley are looking for another win to move further away from the bottom three, whereas Fulham need a win to try and catch teams such as Burnley. This is a one-goal game at the most and I can see the hosts getting it.
Prediction 1-0
Newcastle v Leicester
Karl Darlow was in sensational form against Liverpool last time out and single-handedly secured them a point. Brendan Rodgers' team continues to look like a top four team, but this will be a big test for them. Newcastle will let them have a lot of the ball which is exactly what Leicester like. It will be down to the visitors to break them down and keep the back door shut.
Prediction 0-1
Chelsea v Manchester City
Chelsea are on a rotten run of form and the draw against Villa last time out has piled even more pressure on Frank Lampard. While I do not believe he is in immediate danger, if the top four starts to look out of reach, Roman Abramovich has a big decision to make. City have had a week off following their midweek postponement due to the Covid protocols and should be ready to go. Even without Kyle Walker and Gabriel Jesus, City will win this match.
Prediction 1-3
Southampton v Liverpool
The Saints would have been disappointed to only get a draw with West Ham last time out - they were the better team and had some big chances to win it. Liverpool also drew a blank at Newcastle, but only keeper Karl Darlow saw to that. If Liverpool continue creating as many chances as they did at St Mary's, it is only a matter of time before the goals start flowing again.
Prediction 0-2
